State of emergency declared in Elkhart County

GOSHEN — A state of emergency has been declared for Elkhart County.

According to Emergency Management Director Jennifer Tobey, the emergency was declared because of countywide blizzard conditions.

“Unless it’s an emergency, you should not be out on the roads,” Tobey said.

Tobey said the Emergency Operations Center in the county has been activated and the Red Cross is working to identify three shelters in the north, central and southern portions of the county to house stranded motorists if necessary.

“Every truck and every contractor possible is out on the roads and they cannot keep up,” Tobey said.

She said wind is causing drifting and people are getting their vehicles stuck.

“Our secondary concern is the temperatures and the high winds that are forecasted,” Tobey said. “You just don’t want people out in it.”
