Committee recommends cut in Goshen library hours

GOSHEN — The Goshen Public Library Public Services Committee is set to propose hour cuts to the full Board of Trustees next week.

The proposal includes a loss of six and a half “open” hours during the week, but will extend weekend hours by a half-hour each day, according to Library Director Andy Waters.

“We had a number of staff meetings where we got input,” Waters said. “We’re trying to spread the reduction of the weekday shortening of hours.”

The proposed hours would be Monday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., according to Waters. The library’s current hours are Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“The emphasis is evening and weekend hours are the ones to protect,” Waters said to the committee.

The full-time library staff members will still have a full 40-hour work week under these proposed times because of staff-only work hours from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays.

“We looked at circulation statistics, and we don’t think these hours will be that large of an impact,” Waters said.

After the Committee proposes these new hours to the full Board of Trustees at Tuesday’s meeting, the public will have one month to provide feedback before the Board votes on them at the August meeting.

“I think everybody understands that these are difficult choices and we’re trying to strike a balance,” he said.

Even with the proposed cuts, the Goshen Public Library would still meet “exceptional” standards as set by the state Indiana Public Library governing body. To have an “exceptional” rating, which is the highest mark achievable, the Goshen Public Library would have to be open at least 55 hours a week, with either six evening hours and two weekend days or eight evening hours and one weekend day.

With the new hours, the library will still be open a total of 55 hours a week, with eight evening hours and two weekend days.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
